Recently in Baltimore three young children (ages 7, 8, and 11) were handcuffed and placed in a holding cell after stealing from a neighbor’s yard.

Toya Goodson, mother of the boys involved, claims the punishment was too harsh, but does not deny her son did something wrong.  According to a recent article in the Baltimore Sun, Goodson, “acknowledges that her son, Ayize Massey, joined older kids and stole the man’s scooter from Newport Street, then dropped it as the owner chased him to the boy’s home on Falls Road and called 911.”

This morning, Goodson, her son, and another boy involved along with his mother were interviewed by Steve Doocy on Fox and Friends.  Goodson said she is considering legal action because the children’s “health and safety were put at risk”.  One of the more interesting parts of the interview, however, was when Doocy asked Ayize if he stole something out of the neighbor’s yard.  The young boy replied, “No.”  Steve then asked again, saying he had read in a Baltimore paper that the boy had already admitted to doing so.  Ayize said “no” again.  Goodson could then be seen and heard whispering, “Tell the truth, tell the truth” to her son as she stood behind him.  Ayize then admitted, “I did take something…”

Hopefully the boys learned their lesson, but perhaps the punishment wasn’t harsh enough if one of the young boys was ready to lie about it on cable news.

What say you?

Parents of toddlers around the nation are very familiar with “Dora the Explorer”, the colorful animated kids show that teaches kids valuable lessons like helping others as well as teaching them Spanish.  Most parents are also familiar with “Go, Diego, Go!”, the popular “Dora” spin-off.

But are parents as familiar with a similar show entitled, “Ni-hao, Kai-Lan”?  The show’s curriculum parallels that of “Dora” and “Diego” but teaches children Mandarin Chinese along with Chinese culture and values.

Considering that China owns a large percentage of the U.S. debt (much more than Mexico), it might be a good idea to ditch “Dora” and “Diego” and begin showing “Kai-Lan” to your children instead.
